DOTS puts every lifter on one scale regardless of bodyweight, so a 59 kg lifter and a 120 kg lifter can be compared directly. As a rough guide:
| DOTS | Level |
|---|---|
| 200–300 | Novice |
| 300–400 | Intermediate |
| 400–450 | Advanced |
| 450–500 | National level |
| 500+ | International elite |
The bands are the same for men and women — that's the whole point of the coefficient.
DOTS vs Wilks vs IPF GL
Wilks was the standard for decades, but it under-rewarded the lightest and heaviest lifters. DOTS was built to correct that bias and is now what most meet software and online rankings use. IPF GL points are the IPF's own system, on a different scale where roughly 100 means world-record level.
If you're comparing yourself to online leaderboards, use DOTS. If you compete in an IPF affiliate, your placing uses GL points.
How DOTS is calculated
Your total is multiplied by 500 and divided by a fourth-degree polynomial of your bodyweight in kilograms, with separate coefficients for men and women. Bodyweight is capped at 210 kg for men and 150 kg for women, so beyond that the coefficient stops changing.
Questions
Does DOTS work for a single lift?
It's designed for a full three-lift total. You can run a single lift through it for a rough comparison, but the resulting number isn't comparable to a real DOTS score.
Should I use kg or lb?
Either — the calculator converts for you. The formulas themselves are defined in kilograms.
Which one do federations use?
IPF and its affiliates use GL points. Many other federations and most online rankings use DOTS. Wilks still appears in older records and results.
