What is RPE in powerlifting?
RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion. In strength training it measures how hard a set felt, based on how many more reps you could have done (reps in reserve, RIR):
RPE 10 — maximal effort, no reps left.
RPE 9 — 1 rep in reserve.
RPE 8 — 2 reps in reserve.
RPE 7 — 3 reps in reserve.
Half points (9.5, 8.5…) sit in between.
How the RPE calculator estimates your one rep max
Every pair of reps and RPE corresponds to a fixed percentage of your 1RM. The calculator divides the weight you lifted by that percentage to get your estimated 1RM (e1RM) — no max testing needed. To program the next set, it multiplies your e1RM by the percentage for your target reps and RPE, then rounds to the nearest plate jump.
RPE to percentage: quick examples
1 rep @ RPE 10 = 100% · 3 reps @ RPE 9 ≈ 89% · 5 reps @ RPE 8 ≈ 81% · 8 reps @ RPE 7 ≈ 71%. The full conversion is in the RPE chart, and the scale is explained in what is RPE.
Frequently asked questions
Is this RPE calculator free?
Yes — the calculator, RPE chart and plate calculator are completely free here and in the Android app. The app offers an optional one-time Pro unlock for the warm-up generator and meet attempt planner.
How do I calculate my 1RM from RPE?
Enter the weight, reps and RPE of a recent set. For example, 5 reps at RPE 8 equals 81.1% of your max, so 150 kg ÷ 0.811 ≈ 185 kg estimated 1RM.
How do I convert RPE to percentage?
Use the RPE chart: find the row for your reps and the column for your RPE. For example 3 reps at RPE 9 ≈ 89% of your 1RM.
What RPE should I train at?
Most strength programming lives between RPE 6 and RPE 9. Lighter technique work sits around RPE 6–7; heavy top sets often target RPE 8–9. RPE 10 is a true max.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The Android app runs fully offline, stores nothing about you, and shows no ads.
